It Takes HEART - II

The first component of reaching the HEART of our kids is heartfelt relationships.  The second component is…Engaging TeachingWe can’t begin to reach the HEART of our kids if they are bored to tears!  We must find ways to engage them.  I hear people say that today’s kids are heard to engage because of all the technology and the fact that they are receiving media input virtually all the time, and to some degree they are right.  It is hard to compete with the media saturated world that they live in.  Sometimes, however, I think we make things too hard, so here’s three ideas to help you provide ENGAGING TEACHING: 1 – Build relationships – Yep, it’s that important!  Who are you going to listen to more…a person you just met, or the pastor you’ve come to love and respect because you know he cares for you?  Kids are no different…that’s why we started with building heartfelt relationships.  You want your kids to listen better, participate more and apply your teaching to their life?  Invest in a deeper relationship with them. 2 – Have fun – I can guarantee you that you won’t engage kids if YOU aren’t enjoying what you are doing.  We often say that we want our kids to have fun, and we DO, but teaching them should be something that we enjoy, too.  If we are called to teach kids, then there will be a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment in what we do.  This goes a long way to engaging our kids. 3 – Make your teaching active and interactive – There is all kind of skills we could talk about in regards to how we teach, and we will with the next set of blog entries, but I believe the biggest skill involved in ENGAGING TEACHING is to get your kids involved.  The way you do that is to make your teaching active – kids were not made to sit and listen for long periods of time; and interactive – kids want to be part of what’s going on, and when they are part of the teaching process, they are going to learn better.   So the first two components of teaching to touch the HEART is: Heartfelt Relationships and Engaging Teaching.
